post Revolution’s Rumored Horsepower

March 30th, 2006

Filed under: Nintendo (Wii, Gamecube, Gameboy) — Russell @ 5:46 pm

IGN has a story about the info they have on the Revolution’s specs.

The long and short is that as expected, the raw power is better than a gamecube, but way less than the 360, or the PS3.
In fact, by numbers alone, the CPU itslelf falls short of even the original XBOX’s CPU.

Of course, we all konw.. CPUs aren’t everything. Nintendo’s focus is on gameplay, and all the polygons in the world are useless if all your doing is another remake of Space Invaders.

Im still anxious for May, to see if there really is more to the Revolution’s revolution.

  1. Well, even the Xbox CPU isn’t that fast — it’s all in the GPU baby.

Having said that, I think we all know full-well that Nintendo isn’t trying to go up-against Sony and Microsoft on this generation. I mean, the Revolution doesn’t even have HDTV support… :’/

  2. Yeah. They say in the article that the GPU is about 2x better than the Gamecube, but still well behind 360 and ps3.

I think Nintendo really is making the stand: Why push the boundaries of “dazzle” when the gameplay isnt improved.

Now, we will have to wait to see if they pull off any real revolutions in gameplay.

  3. I can’t wait. Nintendo will once again show the world that it’s the gameplay that matters and not the graphics. I had a chance to purchase a 360 non-bundled system the other day and said “Edith would you stifle”.

  4. Get out of my chaa-ir!

Yeah, I was doing some introspective thinking this morning and I realized that I think of the Revolution almost as a toy instead of the next console. The fact that I don’t know anything about it still brings me back to older console launches - when I bought a Genesis becuase I KNEW sega would do games right. I KNOW that Nintendo will do the revolution right.. it’s like a safety net. How do I know? I _don’t ‘t know_, but the fact that Nintendo is taking a hardware step-back excites me. I no longer need to keep my eye on the horizon to worry about how company X is budgeting 75% toward the next graphics engine, and not on content, story or gameplay.

Meanwhile, when I think of the 360 or the PS3, I wonder how much gaming will realy change. Sure, the mechs will explode better, but does that keep me interested longer? Not usually. Plus, I have my PC to make things go boom.

The only wildcard is Halo 3. Halo is simply the best modern console franchise.

  5. Period.

  6. I agree with Bitta’s point, the revolution seems like it will be a very cool “toy” for all of us. In regards to the 360, i have to say i have not been this pleased with a console in a long while. I use to have a gaming PC to make things go boom, but more and more i like that the 360 suites my “boom” needs, no installing, no configuring and flawless online play is win win for someone who just want to get in a game.
In conversations with some of you i have made the statement that the PS3 will be the next dreamcast (powerful system, great games) and wil fall on its face. Sony i think jumped the hype machine gun in reaction to a lot of things. Sony has said that the final dev kits for the PS3 will not be avail. to dev’s until june of this year! So it begs the question will PLAYABLE PS3 games be on the show floor this year, or will sony jerk us around a second time with pre-rendered fluff? (sorry i am still bitter about waiting in line for 2hours last year to see a “PS3 demo”.)
All in all i think the revolution is what console gaming needs NEW IDEAS, and NEW GAMEPLAY.
Yes Halo 3 is a hell of a wild card, there was an post on Kotaku yesterday saying that halo 3 is looking to be out March of 2007. Personally the “when will it ship” debates are amusing, because i seriously think MSFT will draw the halo 3 card when sony is ready to come to market.
than again i love a good conspiracy!
