post Ultima X: Odyssey DEVELOPMENT CANNED!!

July 1st, 2004

It is a very sad day in game land today. Another sweet looking title has been canned. I was really looking forward to this title. Why it was canned, who knows. Thier reason for why makes no sense. UXO was intended to be a new rebirth for the UO franchise. All I can say is, I’m hoping whatever resources that shift to the UO branded game, can just re-birth that game to a modern era.

Dear Ultima X: Odyssey community members,

As of today, development on Ultima X: Odyssey has ended. We feel that Ultima Online is where we need to focus our online efforts and most of my team will be moving to the UO expansion pack, the UO live team, and an unannounced Ultima Online project. Development on UO will be greatly enhanced as we consolidate our resources behind that franchise.

This isn’t an easy decision but it’s the right move for the future of all things Ultima, including the community and the team. We look forward to sharing our plans for the future of Ultima Online very soon.

I would like to thank all of the Ultima X: Odyssey supporters who have been with us from the beginning. I hope you will continue to support the Ultima franchise and the development team as they transition to new projects.

Thank you,
David “InQWis” Yee
Producer, Ultima X: Odyssey

  3. Well this game wasn’t supposed to replace the established UO franchise, but allow an alternative to the fantasy exploration gameplay. This new one was supposed to be all about action, and in an MMORPG that sounds damn cool.

How many freakin’ ultima games can EA can? Dammit.. I’m really starting to hate EA. A lot.

Everquest 2 is coming out this fall, so I don’t know how many more fantasty MMORPGs I could have stomached anwyay. stomach. We’ll still have Pirates of the Burning Sea (Actiony), too. For me, the most disappointing part of this news is that the genre wont’ advance at all. EQ 2 is just a better EQ, not a gameply shift, and that’s what this indsustry truly needs at this point.

Oh yeah, not t completely change the subject, but check out the June 25th movie download of EQ 2. If that doesn’t blow your mind then I don’t know what will.

2004 has become the year of the dead game. Why won’t Duke Nukem just finally announce it once and for all?

  4. Okay…I’m so bummed. This game looked great and I thought it was very close to being done. Next version of ultima online? I don’t get it - I thought this was it!
