Forget the PSP… now you can play WOW on a handheld computer..
World of Warcraft just got mobile and we’ve got the videos to prove it. In this two part video, John boots up World of Warcraft on an OQO model 02 UMPC and takes his level 70 character to a few different worlds. Their is some killing, some looting and some auction stuff going on. The little unit handles the game remarkably well - but John needs some practice controlling World of Warcraft with his thumbs!
Over the weekend I picked up a copy of Puzzle Quest: Challenge of War Lords for the DS (also available on the PSP, and soon PC).
Puzzle Quest is a solid combination RPG/Puzzle game, and because of that combination is very addictive.
The RPG elements of Puzzle Quest are kind of you standard fare. You pick a class (Warrior, Druid, Knight, or Wizard)
Once you pick a class you can begin the story mode of this RPG. The story consists of picking up standard quests such as, “Go to the sewers, and kill the leader of a Rat cult”, or “Go investigate the Orc camp to the north”. These quests are really just excuses to engage in “Puzzle Battles” with various baddies.
The Puzzle battles in Puzzle Quest, take place on a 8 x 8 board, against a AI opponent. The game play is simple to pick up, but can become challenging.
Where the puzzles become cool is in trying to get chains of 4+ pieces (that will grant you another turn, and grant bonus’ to mana, XP , and gold ) and deciding what to complete, if you want to get a quick hit in chain 3 skulls, if you want to store up some mana for a spell next turn then focus on completing those. Chaining puzzle combos can turn the tied of a battle in a big way!
A Victory will grant your character a decent amount XP and gold (less if you loose). When you level up you are granted skill points that can be put into mana specialization, combat damage, and other stats.
You can also spend gold on new armor, rumor sub quests, and you Citadel.
The citadel will allow you to create buildings that allow you to train mounts, build a training Dungeon, and a Mage tower that allows you to learn spells from captured opponents.
For a Puzzle game there is just so much depth to this game it’s almost staggering at times.
There are some downsides to Puzzle Quest, the AI at times can be brutal (sometimes cheap), and on the DS the presentation seems a bit cramped.
All in all this is a solid pick up and play game for either your Nintendo DS, PSP, and soon on the PC.
Be careful if you’re playing this on the train, you might just miss your stop!
WOW.. you have got to see this vid to belive it. I didnt embed the vid.. so head over to Kotaku for the actual video. BUt wow.. if only it would ever see the light of day. Looks like fun
So what do you think of this vid? For starters, it’s running in blurry footage from an emulator, so its authenticity is far from assured. Then you’ve got the shoddy “alpha” presentation, which while sticking to Casamassina’s story of it being conceptual also could just as easily be a fanboy job.
Me? I call real deal. There were too many people whispering about this thing for it to not be true. What I want to know, though, is why or how this was even conceived. Were Microsoft ever seriously entertaining the idea of letting Halo turn up on a Nintendo handheld? Would Bungie ever seriously entertain the idea of their FPS masterpiece ending up as a Game Boy side-scroller?
These are pretty sweet keychains, but I dont know if I’d be lugging around the cable to play with them.
Though It is impressive how miniature things are getting.
Each keychain has a secret - they contain real games. Plug in the included 6 foot cable (on a battery powered reel) into the keychain and your TV , and you really can enjoy the games of yesteryear. Yes, you read that right: these keychains contain real Atari games, and are fully playable! Here’s how the games break down:* Joystick 1 - Asteroids and Millipede* Joystick 2 - Centipede and Yar’s Revenge* Paddle - Pong, Breakout, and Warlords
Like half the news coming out I have no idea if this comes from E3 or not. But given the timing it’s probably E3 related in some way or another. Anyway here are some screenshots of the upcoming Opera Browser for the Nintendo DS. I can’t wait.
I am not sure why anyone would want to have an XP clone running on the PSP. Majornelson reported today about a cool little app that runs on your PSP that will make it look as if your running XP or Vista. pspWxp is a small application you download to the PSP and it contains a bunch of offline web pages that look like XP or Vista. A List of features can be found here.
Today Nintendo announced the release date, and street price for the Nintendo DS Lite.
Get ready to camp out at your fav. electronics store on June 11, and be sure to have 130.00 ready!
The 130.00 price point is 70.00 less that the street price in Japan.
Well, since I have a PSP, I dont think I would have gone out and bought a micro, but My folks were nice enough to get me one for my birthday (Thanks Amazon wishlist!). And I must say. I think I’m in love.
Sure, it doesnt have the power of a PSP, not by a longshot, but its smaller than my cellphone, and it plays like a dream. With a gorgeous backlit screen, rechargable batteries, headphone jack, and teeny tiny form factor, this is what I wish my old GBA was to start with!
Now, sadly I loaned my GBA to someone… along with my games, and I have no idea who it was. After asking all the usual suspects, I think I will just have to assume that my games and that old gba (with custom back light home installed!) are lost to time.
On the bright side, that gives me a chance to get some new games! Yay!
Game cartriges are quite the racket, as places seem to sell their used carts for only about 5 bucks cheaper than buying new. And Im sure they only buy back carts for peanuts. Sure, I could have used ebay for better prices, but I’m too lazy to deal with it.
In one fail swoop I picked up: Super Mario Advanced 2, and4 (which is the Super Mario World, and Super Mario Brothers 3 [BEST SMB EVER!] GBA remakes respectively), Donkey Kong Country 3, The Castlevania doulbe cart (which has Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow), and The Legend of Zelda : the Minish Cap. Not a bad selection for a tad over $100.
I’ve tested them all out, but the first game I’m settling into is that venerable classic, Zelda. I LOVED the Wind Waker, with the creative use of puzzles, cool items, and progression, It was just wonderfully designed. Im happy to know that even while getting closer to the original zelda roots (i.e. back to 2D), this Zelda game is still beautifully designed.
The hook to this game, has you shrinking down to engage in different puzzles and worlds while being just TINY.
You play parts of the game in big form, and parts in tiny form. And whats cool is that while your tiny, the things you took for granted while big, become major obstacles. Puddles for example, become vast oceans you cannot pass. In addition, monsters, like those silly green slimes, become BOSS fights!
I’m still very early in the game, but already there are great graphics, and fun zleda gameplay. Things like: a jar that sucks stuff in and shoots it out; mushrooms that stretch, so you pull them to make them slingshot you over impassible terrain; and lilly pads that you hop on and use the wind jar as propulsion. All of that mixed in with the classic battle with Octorocs, Swiping down bushes with your sword, and talking to the townsfolk of Hyrule.
Yes, I can see that this little Micro, and the Micro game I got for it, are going to make waiting in lines, traveling, and basically every spare minute I have anywhere, a lot more fun.
Russ is right, it has been quiet over here. Personally, I’ve be realitively quite because I gotta a ton of crap going on, which includes playing ALL of the following: D&D Online, Battle for Middle Earth 2, Empire at War, and Magic Online. I don’t know how I do it honestly. Oh, and I have another project that I’m working on which will be “released” in the next couple of weeks. I’ll let you know when it’s up (Most of you know what it is already)
But enough about that. Dupuis forwarded these two great Video Reviews of the new Nintendo DS Lite. Holy crap, I want one, now. Soo bright! Sooo slim! So gonna buy it!
Although Will Wright’s game Spore sounded like an incredibly cool concept, I was worried it was way too ambitious to pull off something of this scale. Well after seeing this video a lot of those fears are gone. I am truly amazed at their engine. If this video is a good indication of how brillant this game really is then it puts all other God games up to this point to shame. Here is a 35 minute Google Video of Will Wright showing off his creation.
Update: This is a repeat from Dave’s post about 2 months back. Clearly I was too busy to read Monkeygames back then (sorry Dave). Either way that video link required a registration, so for all you lazier people like me the Google Video should work fine.
