post Rumor: Revolution to use 3D ?!?!?!?

April 28th, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — Russell @ 11:28 am

IGN has posted a story which is really just the spreading of a rumor spread off of some other site known as Broken Saint.

Anyway, its the rumor thats interesting:

April 25, 2005 - In the middle of last week, the Broken Saint’s website posted claims they knew the secret behind Nintendo’s upcoming console, codenamed Revolution. Now, if it’s one thing the Web isn’t short on, it’s people claiming they know what drives Nintendo’s Revolution. What makes the claim on Broken Saints compelling, however, is that Brooke Burgess, the man behind the site, is actually in a position to know. Or at the very least, in a position where savory strips of information may be floating around, just waiting to be picked up by wary ears.

Well, it looks like Broken Saints has gone and posted its much-anticipated theory on what makes the Nintendo Revolution revolutionary. At the core of the theory sits how Revolution will display games: through a form of real-time 3D projection. That’s right folks, along the lines of a classic 50s monster movie. Nintendo itself has stated that what it plans to use on Revolution isn’t all that unique, only that it has never been applied to videogames. Taking that into account, plus recent patents filed by Nintendo, and it doesn’t sound all that far fetched, argues Burgess.

UM… if this is true. HOLY MOLEY!

3d Video games at home. That WOULD be revolutionary.

Playboy Station Portable - Portable Nude Photos and Videos: “Last December, Playboy.com launched our ‘iBod’ feature that allowed users to download customized Playboy photo galleries to their iPod Photo device. It was an international sensation, and thousands of tech-savvy lovers of the female form hammered the site to bring home girls on the go.

Always trying to stay ahead of the high-tech curve, we were thrilled when we received our cool, new Sony PSP and found the screen to be bigger and the resolution higher than any portable device we’ve seen. The second we saw the PSP’s capabilities we knew we had to add the Playboy spin to it. Now you can download exclusive video and images of Cyber Girl of the year Amy Sue Cooper, photographed and formatted specifically for viewing on your PlayStation Portable.”

post Sony to offer service to sell in game assets!

WOW.

Slashdot reported that Sony put up an announcement that they will be launching a service to allow players to sell their in game content for REAL money.

This is a big step. It is the first company-sanctioned virtual asset trading system to hit an MMO. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the company, and certainly in the courts.

post Halo 2 Weapons Overhaul

April 18th, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — Della Bitta @ 9:49 am

Starting today those of you playing Halo 2 online will find it more viable to wield only one weapon. Bungie.net has more details on a pretty big gameplay overhaul including increased grenade damage, a shorter grenade fuse, increased melee damage (including a flying smack to the face), etc.

Melee damage has been increased across the board as a counter measure of sorts to close-up dual wielding. Jumping strikes are now much more powerful, often resulting in instant kills, while the general potency has been increased for normal melee attacks and the Brute Shot has been given a specific melee attack boost, in recognition of the fact that it has a huge scythe attached to it. This actually makes the Brute Shot a go-to weapon in a lot of new situations.

Examples of the increase in power include one-hit kills from many jumping strikes, two-hit kills from the Brute Shot melee attack, and far more power on torso and head strikes from all other weapons.

It’s a shame my xbox is toast. I won’t be able to try this stuff out until my new DVD drive arrives in another week. :(

post Physics Cards

First came the sound card… then graphic accelerators made the late 1990’s all about the 3D gaming. In 2005 (that’s this year) games will support the next level of emersive PC gaming goodness: AGEIA Technologies hardware physics accelerators. There are also rumors of the nextgen consoles will incorporate the AGEIA physics chip into their systems.

Team Xbox has an interview with AEGIA on what to expect, and more importantly - when will then be now? A: Soon.

Manju Hegde: Over the next couple of months you will be able to see both special demos as well as game demos from PhysX powered games that will be available during the 2005 Christmas season.

post Madden’s New Vision System

April 14th, 2005

We’re stuck with Madden whether we like their monopoly or not . I love console football too much that a boycott seems out of the question, and so I’m forced to disregard how much I absolutely freakin’ loved the 2k Franchise and how much I loathe EA for puttin’ her down (bastards). I hereby extend an olive branch to EA (as I’m sure they’re listening) but only for so long as they continue to evolve their product. Face it.. monopolies aren’t known for their new features and console football still has a lot of room for growth.

Thankfully the Madden team seems somewhat interested in evolving gameplay. Last year they spiced up the defence game by adding more control to formations, player hits and tackles. For 2006 (read fall 2005) they’ll add Quarterback vision cones. Console football just got a bit more involved - I hope you’ve been practicing.

The Vision idea is pretty simple - a gameplay mechanic is faceted around each quarterback’s “vision” stat. The greater the QB’s vision the wider the cone. A throw to a receiver within your QB’s vision will have a greater chance of completion. The defense cone will be visible to the defense so you’ll have to “fake” look (just like in football) and then hone in on your intended receiver immediately prior to your throw. Amateurs who fixate on their intended receivers will become predictable and often find themselves getting picked off. This adds a great new skill-based gameplay element which I think are key to the longevity of a product.

The control of your vision cone seems rather complex to me, but hopefully it’ll become easier with practice because the gameplay potential sounds fantastic. Gamespy has a good write up.. but for the PS2 version. I hope we get some Xbox 2 screens soon. :)
