post Xbox Next Premiers on MTV?!

April 11th, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — Della Bitta @ 11:49 am

The MTV special, hosted by actor Elijah Wood on May 12, will feature a performance by rock band the Killers. Athletes and celebs will show off the console’s new features. MTV will air teaser spots prior to the event and screening parties will be held in countries in which MTV airs.

Gaw. I’m not a huge fan of MTV, nor do I appreciate Xbox whoring itself out with such an obvious 30 minute Perot-esque commercial “presentation”. I’ll surely cringe through the numerous celebrity-hype moments. “Did you see that game? *fake laughter* That was dope!”.. or whatever the kids say these days.

But the highres vid clips should be entertaining.. and of a higher quality than the crummy shakeycam E3 vid streams we’ll get from the interweb.

I can’t wait for this fall! I want my Halo 3 box!

post Jade Empire: Rave Reviews

April 11th, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — Della Bitta @ 10:50 am

The game hasn’t been released yet but the reviews are all gushing — The title has been “most anticipated” for over a year now.

After KOTR I couldn’t believe the Bioware hype (turn based RPGS are just not my thing these days), but Jade Empire is a fighting RPG - complete with different martial art styles, weapons, and wire-fu combat. If you have an Xbox then it’s worth checking these previews. The game aims to entertain.

IGN has given Jade Empire a 9.9. Meanwhile Gamespy has slapped down 5 stars! Both sites have labeled it as the best RPG for the XBox.

I was flipping through an Ars Technica thread about incredible gaming moments and came across this video clip. It’s the end of a Street Fighter 3 tournament in 2004 where a player Parries 14 special attacks in a row. I guess one parry is hard enough, but 14 fast attacks is insane.

It’s a must watch.. Especially for the crowd’s reaction afterwards. Nerds gone wild!

There’s gotta be a market for spectator gaming. There’s gotta be.

Now we’re talking. This is the best game news I think I’ve ever read.

game girl advance: Sex in Games: Rez Vibrator: “Soon after we got our Japanese Playstation2 in beautiful Ocean Blue, we went shopping for games. In the electronic wonderland of Akihabara we came across the game Rez. ‘Have you ever played it?’ Justin asked me. ‘No,’ I replied, ‘it’s like a music shooting game, right? Seems sorta boring.’”

post Retro Redux: When Yellow Blobs Ate Other Yellow Blobs

Ok, this sounds like one of the coolest competitions EVER. This brings back so many memories of designing games on paper when I was like 12 or something…

“You guys having fun?” asked Carol T. Chung, 23, with the faintest smirk. The combatants didn’t answer, but they didn’t have to. All around them, other groups of young programmers with team names like Flashsmack, G Bunch and Pixel Pirates were racing a deadline to see which team could create the most fun.

It was all part of Retro Redux, a competition last weekend at the Parsons School of Design in Greenwich Village that gave nine teams of aspiring designers a mere 24 hours to create complete games based on the Atari 2600, the classic 1978 console that helped spawn iconic titles like “Asteroids,” “Centipede” and “Pong.” In today’s nostalgia-drenched media culture, it should come as no surprise that Atari has recently revived the 2600 as part of a game system called, aptly enough, the Atari Flashback, which is pitched at 30-somethings hungry for a taste of their childhood.”
