post Nintendo Press Conference - Stream of consiousness

May 18th, 2005

Nintendo

Ok.. the news conferences are long… so if you don’t have time to watch them, I will try to write them up in a stream of consiousness. Deal with the typos.. im typing fast :)

First up.. Nintendo.

(You can watch the conferences in full at Gamespot, or your other favorite game site.

So here goes…

Welcome from the president… snooze.

Quick movie of footage of all of nintendo products. Some new Zelda shots in there. As well as Nintendogs.

Now the other spokesman comes out (not sure who he is). Says nintedo has sold 2 billion games since they got into the business.

Staking claim on the handheld space, and not leaving it. Blah Blah more business crap.. numbers… My sales are bigger than your sales… snooze.

Demoing Electro Plankton. Intersting game / music creation thing.. weird yet neat game. Some DJ guy is showing off how he used the game in the studio and is recording new stuff. Interesting. Very creative.

Now.. they are announcing that they are linking with Gamespy for the DS connectivity.

No charges to access the DS network. You can access via hotspots.. or via wireless in the house.
No added fees to play first party games wirelessly. (YAY)
Positioning is trying to move away from the “macho nature” of current online play. making more games for casual gaming.

Mario Kart while lunch break or waiting for plane. I like it :)

Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing DS… both by wireless internet.. and both by end of year. By year end Tony Hawk wireless for DS.

Mario Kart wifi on the show floor… i’m not there.. what do i care.

Nintendogs.. Miyamoto’s latest project. Interesting little game.

Chick from G4 is here to demo the game…

Hmm.. seems to respond to voice commands… She tries to get the dog to perform.. and its not.. too funny.
HAHAH.. playing with the dog with a remote controlled mario kart. The dog and its world looks rather lifelike.
She spends “money” on shampoo.. and other fun toys.

Bark Mode: Search for another dog to playwith via wireless… pretty neat. When the DS barks, its time to play with another player.. She plays with Miyamoto. Neat. It also sends voice messages. I didn’t even know the DS had a mic.

The dogs are playing together…I think the dogs are humping.. .LOL.. they dont show it too funny. Miyamoto is giggling.

Gameboy Micro…. coooool. ITs like.. slightly larger than an ipod mini. Plays every GBA game. “best and brightest screen” Customizeable faceplates (cellphones anyone?) Coming in the fall. NOT a successor to GBA .. just a style extension.

New handheld games

mario tennes Yohi… Scre breaker.. pokemon metroid prime.. nintendogs.. mega man.. mariokart ds spliner cell electro plankton Need for speed .. goldeneye.. marion luigi 2.. animal crossing ds advancee warrs DS super mario bros… madden nfl ‘06 … spyro… castlevania ds.. SW: episode 3 … trauma center.. ? … viewtiful joe

Wow.. that was a DS esplosion.. hard to write them fast..

REVOLUTION time baby..

He pulled it out from his frickin jacket pocket. ITs the size of a modem. Pretty. Prototype unit. Black. In final form will be smaller. (size of 3 dvd cases stacked to gether). Horizontal or vertical..

nice hot stand.. (you’ve seen pics by now). Prototype colors… black.. white.. red.. green..
12 cm optical discs..

512 mb onboard flash.
option to add SM memory cards
proproetary DRM software..

IBM.. ATI working with nintendo. Advances in technology will have more bearing on gameplay

Every home game machine ahs married a console to a controller.. to a TV. IN next gen.. the internet will be added and wi fi capability. How they all interact will be revolutionary in the revolution design. All controllers will be wireless using broadcom tech. Controllers will also be very unique.. which they will share… later.. *awwww*

One or two wifi games involving major franchise characters will be ready for launch. Smash brothers will be one. Others.. are being worked on.

Rest.. he wont say. Making it a mystery.
He has another Miyamoto creation that will debut with revolution.. they wont say.

Next gen mario, zelda, metroid are underway. (duh)

The key here is “not what you are playing” but “how you are playing”.

Typical 1st and 3rd party games. Final Fantasy wi-fi version for revolution is in the works for example.

They claim that the development of games on the revolution will be much easier.

Finally.. backward compatibility. They will accept gamecube games. Revolution is a virtual console.. capable of fdownloading 20 years of nintendo content. NES.. SNES.. N64..
WOW.. amazing.
It is technically capable of playing every nintendo console game.. ever created. WOW.. BRILLIANT! THey are cashing in on the nostalgia market! Brilliant.

“The machine is the tool… the experience comes from the software.”

Revolution arrive next year.
Draw core gamers.. casual gamers…
“We will even draw non-gamers to our revolution” interesting… Called “All access gaming”.
Wider defninition of what a video game can me?? (mysterious).

Now his personal satisfaction of making people happy by playing games.

Now the marketing guy is out to talk about whats coming this year…

another game stream!! ahh!!

Battalion Wars.. neat looknig squad cartoony missions. Action gameplay with RTS.. kinda FPS too.
cute.. Think BF1942.. but cartoony and easier. I like it.

Pokemon XD gale of darkness. an RPG. Looks more serious.

WOW.. awesome loking game..
Killer 7.. cellshaded. A person with 7 personalitiels… Crazy. like.. artworking.. amazing.

Mario is going to be in: Mario Baseball (bout time) multiplayer up to 4 players.
Mario soccor.. in Super Mario Strikers. Roving chain chomps.. hehe.. 4 players.
Mario Party 7 .. (THEY KEEP COMING!) 80 new minigames. Simultaneous 8 player mode. new characters.. microphone use.
Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix… um.. crazy.

STREAM!! AHH!
fire emblem’: battallino wars… geist… killer 7 (so cool).. batman begins.. pokemon XD… charlie and the choc. factory… donkey konga 2… incredible hulk… dreamworks madagascar… Madden NFL 2006.. one piece.. scooby doo unmasked… spartan total wariior… dance dance mario mix… mario party 7… WWE day of reckoning 2… super mario strikers… pennant chaese baseball.. arcade trasures… harvest moon… shadow the hedgehog… marion baseball.. mMOH eurpoean assault…

Phew.. those are hard.

Best for last:
Link ..

Very mature looking (as youve all seen). um.. still shots… SHOW ME FOOTAGE!
nice environs.. a scary castle. a pixelated drop? wtf? areas that lok like fable… Link grows up
lighting with a lamp…. a mysterious Zelda.. Crying link… LNIK as a WEREWOLF! AWESOME!
Some badass looking digital imp. WHO RIDES YOU?!?!? nice.
ghost rats… mounted combat! Mounted comnbat VS.. badasses Link’s mom? link on canoe.
link riding SPIDER! normal combat. Plant like boss… sunset
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HOT HOT HOT!

Everyone gets video on a DS cartridge in the press kit… (look for it online!)

The end…

Whew… that was some ride.
My impressions:

1) The revolution looks nice. Though their hints of the game being more important than the box seem to allow them to hedge their bets on machine specs. Though this has always been their stance. Love the games.
2) The entire nintendo catalog for play. Um.. phantom can go screw… thats simply AMAZING.
3) Wireless DS. Looks very nice. I dont have one.. but i can see how it will come into its own.
4) This year’s GC games. Ahh sweet sweet zelda. That game will rock. We expect nothing less.

Well.. I hope you enjoyed my stream o consiousness. Typos and all.
Tune in soon for the Sony and the XBOX conferences.

post The Movies

May 18th, 2005

The Movies screen Courtesy Gamespot
So one game that already has my eye with its preshow reports is Peter Molyneaux’s next visionary game, The Movies. I have to admit that when i first heard about the game, I was not that impressed. Now.. im starting to be.

There is a great movie at Gamespot (called official trailer 2) and in that, you see what a wide array of things the people in the game do. Everything from the actress’s wanting a boob job, to the different sets, props, costumes, etc.

Besisdes the “sim studio” aspect, I think this game may be a great outlet for the home-brew cinemaphiles out there. Now, the only thing i can forsee as being a hole, is the lack of support for user-created content (like new costumes.. sets..etc). If they did that a-la the sims, then I think this game would be a phenomenon.

I look forward to the days when I can while away some time watching someone’s movie creation.

post Tuesday Trailer Roundup

May 17th, 2005

As far as pre-E3 trailers go, 2005 is a pretty disappointing year. Sure… the graphics engines are topnotch, but the wow/cool factor just isn’t there. Some trailers are even embarrassing ( Gods and Heros I’m looking at you ).

Here are most of the trailers released yesterday and today, with ratings and comments to boot:

Gears of War (fileplanet)

I admit that don’t know much about this game (yet). Seems like humans vs cyborg-aliens shooter (yes, another) atop the amazing Unreal 3 engine. This movie is worth the download just to see the Unreal Engine 3 driving a game. Now the plot sounds amazingly like Quake 4, but in GoW the battle versus evil aliens takes place on Earth. Expect futuristic settings, firefights in parks, etc. Also unlike Quake 4 this game’s trailer is far more explosive and cinematic. 3.5 stars.

Quake 4 - (fileplanet)

Quake 4 is what I hope Doom 3 should have been. Squad based combat in a hellish nightmare on the Stogg homeworld. Battle against the reanimated remains of your fallen squadmates.. who look like something out of the last few scenes of House of 1000 Corpses. The trailer has this distracting bluish hue over everything, and despite the appearance of a giant mechanized strider (*cough* Half Life 2 *cough*) the trailer seems to lack the cinematic qualities to impress. Still, I have no doubt that this game will be fun a shotgun blasting romp through hell. 3 stars.

Gods and Heros - (fileplanet)

This game sounds good on paper - an ancient Rome MMORPG where you form squads of NPCS, upgrade their weapons, armor, etc, and enter into tactical real time combat. Everquest meets a chessboard. Call out formations to tackle Cyclops, Gorgans, etc. Special combat animations couple your character to your opponent, and removes that “disconnected combat” feel of most other MORPGS. I’m all for gameplay, but these graphics are suprisingly Horizons-like, or even worse - Dark Age of Camelot before its facelift. This game is starting to slide off my radar. 2 stars.

Ghost Recon 3 - (fileshack)

A slick UI, incredible character models, and modest environments. What pisses me off about this trailer is simple - the guy who controls the character doesn’t shoot at the enemies, but 15 degrees to the right of them and into a concrete slab. I mean seriously… we’re at E3 here people. Please, put enough love into trailers where you’re at least shooting AT the bad guys. Despite this, the explosion is so jaw dropping gorgeous that it boosts my rating considerable. I can only hope the Xbox 360 can really pull crap like this off. 4 stars.

Rise of Legends - (fileshack)

Best trailer yet, and from an RTS? Go back in history and rewrite industrial design from da Vinci till now. Hulking metal robots fight Fantasy creatures around large city spires. The artwork is just fantastic and I can’t wait to see how Big Huge Games adapts their stellar Rise of Nations engine / gameplay to this new setting. 4.5 stars.

More trailers on the way!
