post ‘Doom’ Full Trailer Released

August 25th, 2005

Filed under: Loosely Game Related — Della Bitta @ 10:01 am

Grab it from Fileshack.

The trailer shows some of the Movie’s first-person scenes that attempt to bridge the gap between Movies and Video Games. It seems too disconnected.. the weapon slides around on the right side of the screen in a way that’s a little too much like the PC game. Except this time it’s 30 feet high and NOT in your control — I could see how this might become nauseating. I haven’t seen the finished product yet (and I’m not really knocking down the door to view it, honestly) but movies shouldn’t mimic games quite this much.

The last few moments of the trailer show the marine’s encounter with one of the dog beasties. It’s in the first person — and the chain saw kicks in. That scene could be fun. Here poochie! I got a milk bone for ya!

post DDO Q&A

August 24th, 2005

D&D Online Q&A on Gamespy.

“Watch this,” Eckleberry said as his dwarf tumbled and dodged around the club-wielding giant. “This is the value of the defensive stance.” His dwarf held up his shield as the giant swung his club, preventing the dwarf from getting knocked down, as had happened on a number of previous occasions. A flurry of axe moves and the battle was over, the giant on the ground, ready to be looted. “What you just saw was one of the most important elements we wanted to get into Dungeons & Dragons Online that would distinguish us from our competition — genuinely enjoyable combat.”

“Let’s face it,” he began. “There are a lot of great games out there. We know, we’ve played most of them obsessively.” According to Eckleberry, one of the Dungeons & Dragons Online team’s key insights was about the nature of combat in most other MMOs. “The majority of the fun in other MMOs is the advancement and the acquisition of stuff,” he said. “I don’t want to minimize that, because it’s important, but the actual combat is often very boring. Click a few buttons and watch your character and the enemy go through a pre-programmed turn-based dance. We wanted to get away from that. You spend a huge amount of time in an MMO in combat, so we wanted to make every moment of that fun, not just something you get through to get to the fun.” — GAMESPY.COM

The more I hear about this game the more I want it. All of the dungeons in D&D:O are instance based.. and they’re shipping with 150-200 of them. If combat is anything like the LOTR console games ( ala Golden Axe style ) , and then there’s D&D On top of that… then damn! where’s the gravy?

This game just became my upcoming MMORPG of choice.

Bungie.net : Top Story

Here is the first fully legit confirmation i have seen about a Halo movie. And its from Bungie itself.

Sweet.

Edit from DDB:

Alex Garland (28 Days Later) will write the script. Would you like to know more?.

Also in Halo-ville - EB Games has a ship date for Halo3 (Xbox 360) — June 30th, 2006. Those marketing bastages put it smack dab in the middle of the World Cup Finals.

post Death Jr. Review

August 23rd, 2005

Filed under: Portable Gaming (Gameboy, DS, PSP) — Chris @ 12:27 pm

Everyone has a gaming niche that they favor. For me this would be platformers (Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Mario) platformers are supposed to be straight forward fun games; solid controls, lots of cool moves, great story, and characters you care about.
None for these core components exist in Death Jr. for the PSP. The last opportunity I had a chance to play Death Jr. at this years E3. I got to play a demo level that had me running, jumping, shooting monsters and having a good old time. This game had a lot of promise and in the end turned out to be a colossal letdown.
A few nights ago i got home popped Death Jr. in my PSP and hunkered down for some platforming goodness. I was sad (yes actually sad) after playing for fifteen minuets. The controls in Death Jr. are sloppy at best. “DJ” has your standard set of abilities; Jumping, dodge, hover and this cool move where he stick his scythe into the wall to climb up. There is also a neat lock on feature used to shoot a variety of standard ranged weapons. You have to be exact in you jumping and timing in Death Jr. platformers are fun because they provide a challenge that may be hard at time but is achievable. In Death Jr. the challenge is making through a level without getting killed by the shotty camera and controls causing you to constantly miss a ledge or swing to the next bar.
I will be the first to admit that the potential story of Death Jr. was very cool to me. The son of the grim reaper and his friends open Pandora’s box while on a fieldtrip “wackiness ensues”. After a brief cut scene you find yourself on a wonderful text adventure fro a large part of the game, no effort was put into character development or story after the initial premise.
Graphically Death Jr. falls very short. At launch of the PSP there were numerous games that showed the full potential of the PSP. Since Death Jr. was the original tech demo for the PSP my expectations were high (given that Namco made a beautiful port of ridge racer in less time than Death Jr.’s dev cycle) . The best way I can explain the quality of the graphics in Death Jr. would be think of a emulated PS1 launch title running on a cell phone.
I may sound bitter in this review, but there was so much potential in Death Jr. I truly hope that the next iteration of this game addresses the problems I have found with the first. Even though the game is a short 7hr romp through platforming pain I can not force myself to finish it. So for now I am heading back to the game store to trade it in, this game is making all the other games in my library sad.

On the Monkeygames scale Death Jr. gets 1 stick out of 5.

post UT 2007 Preview

August 19th, 2005

Filed under: PC — Della Bitta @ 10:59 am

A new UT2007 Preview On IGN.

The game is rumored to be in stores as early as Q1/Q2 2006, but that’s still very much up in the air. Unreal Engine 3 supports endless sized maps with a new map streaming technology (which is why it’s the Massively Online FPS engine of choice for Huxley), but then there’s also this:

“The only load is when you join a server in UT 2007. Once that match ends, the game will pop you right into the next one.” James explained that the streaming technology would let the engine anticipate the next bout and prepare for it, which will cut back on a lot of gaming downtime.

This comes as a relief after playing both the F.E.A.R demo and Battlefield 2 (it often takes 2 minutes to load a map). I thought load times were only going to become longer since chip-speeds leveled off. Nice work Epic.

The screenshots from IGN are branded with their logo so I can’t post them, but click here for their collection amazing s.shots .
