post New game Concepts… They’re out there..

January 30th, 2006

Wired has an interesting article that takes a look at some free independant games out there that are trying new twists on gameplay.

One that really caught my eye (I haven’t tried it just yet, but im looking forward to it) is Cloud.

Cloud is a “flight sim” where you are a boy who can fly around in an idyllic world. You are corraling clouds, and shaping them, and trying to remove the dark clouds, by surrounding them with light clouds. The Wired author indicates that the game produced in him a sense of calm and well being. He then asks why more games don’t seek to do this. I think I agree with him.

Most games are based on some sort of conflict. In the end, its the conflict that makes games have.. drama. But I think there is a simple genre of games that could exist where the point is simply to derive fun from pleasureable experiences. Maybe sandbox games come to mind, as playing a god, or messing with a system can certainly be fun and exploratory.

At any rate.. check out the article for Cloud, and some other new game concepts.

FYI.. on the total opposite subject of peaceful relaxing games. I just tried the “Arcadia” game mentioned in the article. In that game you play simple classic style arcade games…. only you play 4 at once. Its pretty frenetic.. and its awesome ;p

No sorry, that’s not a working DNS name. However there really is a World of Warcraft map utilizing the Google Maps API. It’s guaranteed for hours of entertainment… or minutes depending on who you are. Click here for map goodness.

post A Look at Crysis

January 27th, 2006

Filed under: Microsoft (Xbox, Xbox 360), PC, News — Della Bitta @ 11:58 am

I heart Farcry for everything that it tried (and succeeded) at being. One of it’s eventual competitors, Doom 3, was supposed to have an amazing new engine that blew everything else out of the water, but at the end of the day I’d rather look at Farcry’s colorful archipelago landscapes than that dark labyrinthine under city that is Doom 3.

Crytek remained silent about future projects for what seemed like forever. This was surprising, and even painful, considering how successful FarCry had become. I wanted more crack, and I wanted it now (which was then, but I still want it now, still.).

Then, almost half a year ago we saw some amazing footage of their new engine they had been working on. At the time it supported dynamic day/night cycles, bending foliage, facial textures and expressions that blew our minds, a more advanced physics engine, and some more purty island shots. We also heard hints that the new engine was Windows Vista only — and that was a total bummer considering 1: Who knows how good Vista will be and 2: it’s release date seemed so far away. There wasn’t any information regarding what the engine would be used for — Farcry 2 or some other secret project that was rumored.

Well now we have full blown information. I just found some links of various scans of Crysis in a German Magazine. Here they are in order:

1. 2. 3. 4.
5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Some of these shots are absolutely amazing. I love the pic of the North Korean soldiers sniffing-out that makeshift hut. Damn, that looks real.

Now, if you don’t speak German, then those links are only purty pictures. Thankfully NVNews was nice enough to translate that article which unveils some great game information about Crysis. There’s some story spoilers in there, so beware.

Here’s some stuff I thought was cool. Your character has a bio-suit developed by the US Army that you can customize as you progress through the game. It sounds as though that you get some airdrops with “customization points” and you can spend them on customizing your weapons or suit any way you like, so near the end of the game you could have uber power, uber stealth, etc, depending on your choices, like Deus Ex.

There will be a point where you’re forced into an alliance with a one-time enemy. The leader of this faction will remember how you’ve treated his troops in prior missions. If you were mercilessly killing his troops en masse, then he’ll be scornful and will reluctantly aid you throughout the rest of the campaign. But if you’re nice, stealthy, and only knock-out his guys, or kill only a few of them, then he’ll be more willing to aid you as the game moves-on. Custom Narrative == Sweet.

From the translation:

An unknown object (not an asteriod because it didn´t cause enough damage) hits an island in the Pacific, and the North Koreans send their army to investiage the issue, and so does China and the US sends two carrier there as well. The tensions between the NK and US are close to a war, so the US starts a CovertOp and sends in Jake Dunn (our character) and a small team to infiltrate and investigate the situation on the island. He and his team make a HALO jump at night and unlike in “NOLF”, this isn´t a special level but we actually fall several miles thru air and the beautiful volumetric clouds and can steer our ´chute onto the island beneath us. There are no annoying level loadings and every object casts his own shadows which move accordingly as the times passes by just like in real life.

Yes Please. The game is rumored to ship when Vista releases (Q4 2006??), and it might even have a DirectX 9.0 version for those unwilling to upgrade Windows. I’m sure we’ll get more details out of GDC and E3 over the next few months.

post Ps3 Demo Reel

January 27th, 2006

Well to quote Jane’s Addiction “Here we go!” Today on the Wal Mart site the first Ps3 product page has been put up!
The page contains details on the PS3’s hardware and mentions a few of the systems perks.
Sadly the “boomerang” controller still seems to be the one they are going to run with. That thing looks about as comfortable as the original Xbox “big hands” controller.
The sweet, sweet candy on this page is an 8min trailer that shows renders and in game footage of upcoming PS3 Launch titles!!!
While Ratchet and Clank will most likely not be included in the launch lineup there is some great eye candy.
Given the problems i had in getting my 360 soon I will have to figure out what second console I should pull the trigger on and soon.
There is also a second page on the Wal-Mart site, that has good information on the Revolution

Ultima 6 Lord British

A few weeks ago when I first found this link I immediately thought of posting it to monkeygames. At the time I remembered that I didn’t have access to posting so I made mental note of getting permission. Of course being me I forgot… until today when I logged on and saw that I have posting privileges (thanks Russ!).

Anyhow this next site really brings back memories. This fine fellow Ian Albert made a hobby of creating full high resolution maps of various games. And when I mean high resolution I mean it. One picture is a 133MB gif… a gif! His collection includes great classics like Legend of Zelda, Ultima 6 and 7, Doom I and II and quite a few more. My personal favorites are the Ultimas. Check it out.

E3 news is already beginning to trickle in. Via slashdot comes this link to GameDaily about a little of what we can expect at this year’s E3.

GameDaily has a ditbit on each of the big 3 (Sony, Nintento, and Microsoft). My personal excitement is on
Nintendo. I can’t wait to get the skinny on the revolution.

Theres still time to get a premium account at your favorite game site, and watch the streaming Keynotes. You konw mine is all paid up!

We’ll see you on the beach!

post I knew I wasn’t Crazy - the New DS

January 26th, 2006

A while back, probably in the Fall, I ‘remember’ a talk I had with Jordan about the upcoming slimline Nintendo DS. Shortly before Christmas I once again spoke to him about it, but he had aboslutley no idea what I was talking about. Seems that I dreamt the whole thing. I went away from the conversation wondering if Tinkerbell was right — did I have reality vs imagination problems to deal with?

Thankfully that bitch was wrong. There’s a new slimline DS coming. One of my beefs with the original DS was that it was a honking mass of ‘portable’ gaming. This slimline version is 42% smaller…. and although rumors say that the screens will stay the same size, here’s hoping that the smaller form factor doesn’t affect gameplay too much. After all, the DS has some pretty unique controls.

The DS-Lite is reported to launch in March in Japan, at 112 Euros. Considering the already impressive lineup of DS games, this console seems like a no-brainer to me. Read more about it at Eurogamer.

post No More Booth Babes @ E3

While Slashdot may be applauding the move to get rid of Booth Babes, I for one, am saddened. Seeing the next real life Laura Croft, just wont be the same any more.

Seriously though, using women like sex objects is probably not too endearing to those whomen who are into gaming. So it’s the right move, to help put behind us the “nerdy sex-starved gamer” stereotype.

On the other hand, they were hot.

post Full Auto Demo (1.25.06)

January 24th, 2006

Filed under: Microsoft (Xbox, Xbox 360) — Chris @ 12:29 pm

Today Gamespot has an update on Sega’s next 360 release “Full Auto”.
The last time I played this game, it was a “blast”. The cool features in this game are things like; Full destructible worlds (ex: need to take out a group of cars in front of you? Launch a rocket at the support beam of a water tower, and watch it crash down on them!). There is also a feature that allows you to turn back time, (ala the sand of time).
The frame rate was smooth (even with all the activity) and the game play is fast!
Full Auto’s demo will be available tomorrow on Xbox live, if you are able I highly recommend downloading it!
