post BOOT to the Head!

April 12th, 2006

Filed under: Mac — Russell @ 2:18 pm

I have long made fun of those friends of mine who are mac-philes and also gamers. I would ask them if they recalled that great part in HL2 when you meet Dog… and then say.. “Oh wait.. i guess you dont remember that.. cuz your on a mac”.

The sad fact is, there is just not the selection of games on the Mac that there should be, and all my jokes aside, those poor bastards have really missed out. Well if you have been living in a shell for the last week or so, I’m here to tell you that those days are all over.

For those new macs that are using an Intel chipset, there is now an option to have a dual boot machine, OSX and Windows XP. This is supported with a package Apple is calling Boot Camp. This package does not include Windows, you will have to get a copy yourself, but it DOES include video drivers etc. And while most apples with the Intel chipset are still of the smaller variety (laptops and Imacs) the towers are coming soon. That will mean all the graphics horsepower you can get in your favorite PC, will now be available in Macs too. Finally, those who live and breathe on the Mac will not be forced to have that second machine, a gaming-only PC, to actually have fun on. Though they will have to maintain a windows OS.. if only sparingly.

I konw what you’re thinking. I was skeptical at first. I was a non-believer. Then I saw this footage of Half Life 2, on a boot-camped Intel IMac, and I grudgingly admit, it loads faster than my rig, and it plays just as good.

To all those Mac gamers who have suffered by missing out on great titles, I say to you… Welcome Home.

We’ve discussed Gary’s Mod before. That’s that open ended mod for HL2 that lets you turn HL2 into a physics playground.

Well this guy.. hes just got wayy too much time on his hands.

Oh.. and its lovely.

P.S. I love the “rocket girders”

(Thanks Cotton, and Happy Birthday!)

Cubed3.com :: Nintendo Revolution Screens | Red Steel Scans

Slashdot reported this, and it seems legit.

I’m a bit surprised to see the first leaks about a revolution game being one that is mature themed, But can you just imagine pointing that controller!!!

AWESOME!

And the graphics look pretty damn hot too.

post Rumor Mill: Halo MMO

Stay with me here. Xbox365.com posts, that GamersReports.com posted, that the April issue of GameInformer will publish a story == Bungie is putting together a team to “investigate” a Massively Multiplayer Online version of Halo.

Yikes.

Obviously take it as a grain of salt. A year ago I would have laughed at such a rumor, but the MMOFPS game Huxley is looking pretty damn sweet. I could see how Halo could translate well, too, for PvE and PvP combat.

Hopefully we’ll learn more (either way) at E3.

Well, having a little spare time, and the inclination, I finally put up a couple of Feed links on the sidebar.

It turns out Wordpress has always been publishing feeds, but I just never made the links. So for those of you out there who are feed-people, sorry it took so long, and enjoy.

post An Oblivion Hint… How to get the Unbreakable lockpick.

April 10th, 2006

Filed under: Microsoft (Xbox, Xbox 360), PC — Russell @ 10:27 am

I got this tip via the Gamespot Oblivion Game Guide, but the walkthrough is all me.

So. I’m not the kind to post crazy spoilers about a game normally. But this one I felt was worth posting, since its so nice. I will also state that Oblivion is frickin amazingly good. Its so immersive, and entertaining, I can play it all day and not realize time has flown by. That is the mark of a great game.

Without further ado.. if you don’t want to be spoiled.. DON’T READ ON!

Oh.. and you need to be Level 10 to do this quest.

—- SPOILERS —-

Ok.. the key here is to first head to the Shrine of Nocturne. Its along the NE road out of Layawiin. Just travel along it, and you will find a statue with some people hanging around it. (if you arrive at night, its that much cooler for the ambiance).

Use the statue to get the quest.

—- WALKTHROUGH BELOW —–

The god (goddess?) wants you to return an item that was stolen from her shrine, the Eye of Nocturne. She says the people who stole it are in Leyawinn.

Head back into Leyawinn, and you will eventually come across a house with 2 lizard-folk inside. I forget their names, and I forget the exact location of the house, but you will find it if you are persistent.

When you walk in, there is a small hallway, then the rest of the one room house proper. You should head in, and talk to both of the lizard folk, and that will indicate to you that they KNOW where to find the item you seek. But they hush up when you come close, so the quest tells you you will have to get in, and overhear what they say.

I tried to be sneaky a few times and failed, then at about 8 AM (just after they woke up) I just snuck in that main doorway area inside the house, and it just worked. I couldn’t actually hear what they said, but the quest advanced, so whatever.

They indicate that the eye is hidden in a tidal cave not far away. The arrow will appear on your map, but in general you are heading South from Leyawiin along the coast. You will reach a cave. Head inside, fight through some trolls, a bear, and some wolves (at my level anyway) . Near the end of one of the tunnels, you will see water, and some shiny thing beyond. Head under water a tad, and you will find the Eye, and some other crap hidden just under the water.

Insta-travel back to the shrine, and you are good to go! You get as a reward “The Skeleton Key” and you will now have no need to use lockpicks any more, as this one will never break. If you just feel like selling it, It listed as 5000g ( not that I’ve managed to find someone to buy it at full price yet.. gotta work on mercantilism!) .

At any rate, I hope that little walkthrough helps make your adventuring and thieving life in Oblivion that much more pleasant.

Cheers!

Do yourself a favor. Throw on some headphones, and listen to this G4 review of X3. Yes.. a game review that is NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

Lets just say that this review takes a long hard look at the Kha’ak. You konw.. the Kha’ak, the evil aliens in X3.

Yup, deffinitely funny.

Deffinitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

According to www.got-next.com , in addition to its own back-catalog, Nintendo plans to feature a similar selection from Genesis, and TurboGrafix 16 !!!

If this turns out to be fact (they say they got it from Gamespot, who got it at the GDC keynote), then this will further rock the house.

*roooaar!* This news has me powering up into a werewolf as you read this.

post PS3 Pricetag Just keeps climbing

April 5th, 2006

During a radio interview with George Fornay: the President of Sony Entertainment Europe. The PS3 will now cost between 499 to 599 pounds (roughly 600.00 to 720,oo US).
Also included in the interview was this little tid-bit “The PS3 will hit Europe in November”. This could mean PS3′ in time for x-mas in the US.
Last but by no means least, an explanation for the PS3’s delay to market was due to issues concerning blu-ray copy protection.
Maybe its just me, but every time a Sony executive opens their mouth about the PS3’s cost it drops lower and lower on my “priority list”! (that is until the Ratchet and Clank game demo’ed at this years GDC comes out, then all bets are off.)

post Oblivion: How To pick Locks

April 4th, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — Chris @ 1:26 pm

lockpicking
In Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, there is one aspect of the game that walks a fine line between fun and frustration, and that is lock picking.
Today on Kotaku, there is a great post of a Youtube movie. It turns out if you want to get good a picking locks you should not use you eyes so much as use your ears (just like a real Thief).
Hear is the Link Good Hunting!

Note From the Author:
“There are three tumbler speeds. As you can see in the video, the slow tumbler produces a distinct one-two pinging sound, whereas the fast tumblers squish the sounds together close enough for them to sound like a single sound.

The trick is to look away from the screen and click the mouse based solely on what you hear as you jiggle the lockpick. Click the mouse within 250ms of hearing that second ping to lock the tumbler in place every time.”
